However...one personal story of mine. I used to live in Akita as a study abroad student. I stayed overnight in a train station stall once during the winter while on a trip to visit another friend in Osaka. Another person was also doing the same. I think she was also a student, maybe high school. She bought 2 hot cans of cocoa and gave one to me. The can was very warm and we didn't speak much...but her kindness was greatly appreciated. I never talked to or contacted her after that. I don't even think we exchanged information. This proves that kindness to strangers in Japan does happen, albeit not common.

In China, it's common now when you see an old person in such a situation...that little to nobody helps. There used to be elderly people that scammed real helpers by suing them. This has prompted many to stop helping elderly people that look like they're in trouble. It's very sad that society has created this problem here. I have spent 7yrs in Japan and can attest to Nobita's story for the most part. I don't know if this is due to scamming or not, but people passing by don't want to be troubled with the situation. It's heart breaking..
