  1. They used the nuclear bombs with a reason, as you say, it was a political signal and, also, it was a "scientific" experiment to investigate the effect of the use of nuclear bombs on civilian infrastructure.

  2. The USA had asked the Soviet Union to open a 2nd front on Japan. Stalin always declined, as his 1st priority was to beat Nazi-Germany with the conquest of Berlin. When that was achieved, he was willing to open a 2nd front on Japan in ~August 1945. The USA had reconsidered and did not want the Soviet Union to intervene in Japan. The bombs were ready, all the planning for the bombing was ready. The USA absolutely wanted to carry out this experiment. They had to do this before the Soviet Union intervened and thus preserve the excuse of "necessity". Pure evil!
