  2. Thank you for your great story telling. The Apache or any other native tribe didn't need anything from white people. For thousands of years the land had provided. That stopped when white people (mostly Spaniards, since the 16th century) came to raid for slaves for silver mines and whatever (the men and boys) and households/pleasure (women). It was (mostly) only in the 19th century when the american colonists came into the South-west. They were not interested in the native people at all. The ruling concept with white people was "get out of the way or die". The Americans wanted the land for their own form of culture. The native people stood in the way, so they had to be removed. The native people had hundreds of years of experience to fight intruders and slave raiders (from their experience with the Spaniards/Mexicans they would always kill them, sometimes (or often) after torture). They knew they could not fight like them, but they did know how to fight them to be somewhat successfull! It is great to hear of the skills they developed to live of the land. The land, of course, had even become more rugged after the white people took the places, where it was relatively easy to live. The natives took advantage of their new neighbors. For the Chiricahuas they got to know the Americans through the Bascomb affair. The Americans never made up for their wrong-doings. In our romantic lore, the Chiricahuas started to kill Americans whenever they could after that. This justified further land-theft and genocide.
