Excellent account. Can be used as a start of a discussion piece in high school history classes. Presenting apologies is a deflection strategy. Look into the micro-effect effects of the slave trade. The Dutch barbarism has, unfortunately, not been mentioned by our king or our PM. Apologies are very cheap. As a first step, it is important, but a solid description of the micro-culture of slavery is essential. NL competes with the Belgians under Leopold II for most barbaric country. The religions, reformed or Christian, also played along. Slavery did absolutely not conflicht with "the believes".

France has had a lot of time to lift Mali out of poverty, to help rural areas, to introduce techniques to stop desertification, to harvest energy from the sun, to educate people in their own language, to strengthen peoples connection with their own culture, to help local people to adopt westen technology in harmony with traditional knowledge, to exploit resources to benefit also the local peoples to a fair degree. The French failed. Mali takes its future into its own hands. I hope there will be respect for all the cultures of Mali from the new Mali government. Together with modern knowledge, the development Mali should have a bright future. The French can buy Uranium ore from Mali at market prices instead of "steal prices".

@joel6427 Humans should not enslave other humans. This is where it starts, if ever, slavery will be eradicated from our societies. "Slavery" is not compatible with "freedom", "autonomy", "responsibility" or "democracy".

@Cedawood "all should agree", but it is very attractive for people to live at the expense of other people. People should not want to live at the expense of other people.

History of USA is dark and evil. That's why the USA likes to make so many movies about nazi war crimes. It distracts from USA crimes against humanity, since 1776.

How did they value human beings? Equal to themselves or a bit less or even quite a bit less?
