Because when you put the idea something is disrespectful into people's heads, they feel offense when they otherwise wouldn't. Blackface has a a history, but for all the other stuff I'm sure 99% of the people bitching about these "racist" Halloween costumes now never thought to be offended until someone put the idea into their head. After all, you don't see the Irish getting butthurt about Saint Patrick's Day.

How many inaccuracies do you think you can find in children's soldier costumes on Halloween? Does that mean their costumes are disrespectful to those who have served? Stop trying to turn people against eachother, that all this "social justice" crap is.

@ingriddubbel8468 But I'm sure you're fine with Saint Patrick's Day.

@QuikVidGuy Please, these are not stereotypes of Mexicans, let alone harmful ones. Nobody thinks all or most or even a significant portion of Mexicans hop the border in a sombrero, drinking tequila, and shaking maracas. These are cartoon depictions. Dressing up with a bag of heroin and lawn mower, THAT would be a demonstrating a dangerous stereotype of Mexicans.

John O Mexicans are 20% white, 60% mestizso, and 20% Indian. They are no more a race than Americans.

Ooooh snap!

What? That doesn't make a goddamn bit of sense. "It's not a costume"? What the hell IS a costume? You can't got to a Halloween Party dressed as a costume. The whole fucking point of a costume is to make you appear like something else. Why the HELL is a the uniform of a soldier or a firefighter or a nun or a police officer a costume but a fucking ninja is not!?
1
Why the hell do Mexicans get to be a race? Mexico is 15% white, 5% black, 60% Mestizo, and 20% native. Is dressing us as a Canadian dressing up as a member of a different race?

@Rossoneri4kt No one gives a shit about cultural appropriation on Saint Patrick's Day.

Second, thousands of white and black people left their society to assimilated with the First Nations throughout the colonial period. So if we name rename the "Native American" costumes to "18th Century First National" costumes (which is obviously what they mean anyway, since nobody thinks the average modern day Cherokee is sitting on his couch watching TV while wearing doe-skin), is everything fine and dandy?

Like Saint Patrick's day, but I'm sure John Oliver has zero problem with that.

Why do Mexicans get to be a race? If I dress up as Scot, or a Frenchman, or an Irish man (Saint Patrick's Day, anyone), I'm seen as dressing as a nationality, not a race. Similarly, it's obvious those "Native American costumes", while I guess they could be better named, are referring to the culture of the people living in the First Nations during America's colonial period. The counter-part to the settlers. They are dressing up as a culture, not a race. Nobody thinks most Native Americans dress that way today.
