Maybe study basic economics? Businesses cannot afford to be greedy in a competitive market. That's why Walmart where I live pays $12.50 even though minimum wage is $7.25. If paid parental leave is important to you, don't sign up to work for someone who isn't offering it. I don't want to be on call, so I don't sign up for a job that requires me to be on call. I don't cry that businesses are greedy for putting their employees on call and force all businesses to conform to my desires.

What does freedom even mean to you leftists? It's a totally empty word to you. Freedom means absence of coercion. You want to coerce businesses into a one size fits all model. If maternity leave is important to you, don't apply for a job that doesn't offer maternity leave. Just like if you don't want to be on call, don't apply for a job that requires you to be on call. Letting businesses set their own rules is slavery, but forcing people to serve you (in case of pregnancy) isn't? I think I'm going to be sick. If paid maternity leave is so important to employees, employers will provide it (which they usually do) unless they have a very good reason not to. That's how competitive markets work. If businesses don't offer paid maternity leave they have a good reason. Don't fucking work for those business, instead of forcing a one-size-fits-all model on the economy. It's called freedom.

Why the living fuck should that surprise anyone? The Philippines also has one of the highest minimum wages in the world if you measure it as a proportion of GDP per capita. Poor countries tend to have more heavliy regulated economies, not less.

The question is not if parents should have paid leave, the question is if businesses should be forced into a one-size fits all model. If something is important to workers, employers have to offer it, or they will be at a serious disadvantage when a competitor does. If the economy worked any other way, we would all be working minimum wage with no benefits. If an employer is not offering parental leave, there must be a damn good reason. I would never want to work at a job where I would be on call. Does that mean I should cry about the inhumanity of businesses that force their employees to be on call and demand this practice be banned? No, its means I'll get a job where I don't have to be on call, and let people who don't have the same priorities take those jobs. In some types of jobs, employees are highly interchangeable, so its not a huge deal if someone goes on leave. In others, it can be catastrophic. This is why the US has twice as high a proportion of women in management positions as Europe, because managers are one of those roles where it can be devastating. Anyone who wants to say some sappy disingenuous bullshit about how I don't have compassion mothers or children or some shit can cram it up your ass. If you liberals actually gave half a fuck about children, why do you support welfare state that let to a 6X increase in single motherhood, while 0% reduction in poverty rate? Your only priority is 'MOAR FREE MONEYZ LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!'

@Zuma Zuma Children are under the charge of their parents, so that's completely apples and oranges. Every other thing you mentioned is unnecessary as long as there is a competitive market. I live in Austin TX. Minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, but even McDonalds pays $10.75.

Plenty of corporations offer this. Corporations can't just ignore the desires of their employees. In Austin its legal to pay someone $7.25 an hour, but even McDonalds pays $10.75. Why? Because the fast food industry makes enough money to do so and if they paid their employees 50% less, all their employees or potential employees would all flock over to the competition because workers really want that extra $3.50. If your company is denying you some form of compensation that's really really important to you, it's for a damn important reason. Stop trying to force a "one size fits all" model on the market.
