This is probably one of the saddest changes in our society: the emergence of the concept of adolescence. Adolescence is an unnatural state and that's why its marked by angst and dysfunction. Teenagers used to be stereotyped as happy-go-lucky. What's worse is adolescence is only getting longer. Now you can't even smoke until you are 21.

Commoners went through puberty later than royal due to poorer nutrition. Royals went through puberty around the time people today do.

@mangot589 Well you're wrong. https://www.bustle.com/articles/114490-the-average-age-women-got-their-first-period-throughout-history

30 or 40 wasn't hold. It was infant mortality and war/childbirth deaths that skewed those numbers. If you made it to 30 you were probably going to last another 30 years.

Ghengis Khan married at 12 to a bride who was 17. I know that much.

I find that hard to believe. Is it even legal to give minors birth control in the US? I think at the very least they would need permission from their parents which would be awkward to attain at the very least. Studies show teens are the most chaste they've been since the sexual revolution, and that's contributing to lower pregnancies.

@nancyomalley9959 I don't know, it sounds like a lie we tell ourselves to excuse throwing people in jail for being icky and creepy. I remember when I was 11 I was ludicrously manipulated by a friend to believe he was getting stalked by a mad scientist. While he took advantage of my youthful gullibility, he was the same age as me. It seems you should either trust someone's judgement when they reach a certain age, or you don't. No one would say Marylin Van Strauss marriage was non-consenual because she was so much smarter than her husband.

I think its tied to education. We artificially extend childhood so we can do that whole K-12 thing.
1
That doesn't mean 30 was old back then. It was child mortality rates which skewed statistics.

@mangot589 Source?

Most people today don't marry until they are in their late 20s/early 30s. That doesn't mean it's considered improper to marry at 18.
1
That's not true at all. Girls finish puberty at 14 on average. Many finish at 12. Many also finish at 16. Anything below that is considered precocious puberty.
1
18 I think. But I've heard 12 also.
1
Now teenage years are marked by angst and dysfunction, because treating teens as children is unnatural. You call this progress?
1
@edennis3202 Poorer people went through puberty later due to poorer nutrition. That's why they married later. You didn't need time to get an education to support yourself (with a peasant standard of living), you just needed to know how to operate a plow.
1
@aliens3219 Girls finish puberty around 12 - 16. 14 on average.
1
That's the one and only reason I wish I lived in the past. I wouldn't go as young as 14 but still.

@Ggdivhjkjl The problem is I think society loves education too much. This was probably the original reason we started delaying adulthood. But the truth is I think even high skilled jobs like Web Development could be prepared for with nothing more than an 8th grade education and specialty training. I can't think of anything really valuable I learned in K-12 after 9th grade.

Marriage wasn't so much a life decision as much as a part of growing up for most of human history. Many people had their marriages arranged by their parents, and those who didn't might only have a couple of potential bachelors in their village. They knew the path their life was going to take, and didn't have to think about things like whether they should take out a mortgage, finish college, etc. Life was much simpler back then.
1
@jusufagung That's because no one cares about what's right and wrong anymore, just what's icky and creepy. They'd rather have their 16 year old daughter get porked by her 16 year old boyfriend and then get an abortion because she can't care for the child (which will scar them both for life) then having her get with a 25 year old who can provide for her, because that's "creepy."
1
I'm very suspicious you are really a "medievalist". The vast majority, like more than 85% of people, were farmers back then, and they usually spent their childhood working on the family farm, so they learned their income-earning trade during childhood.
1
It's not "old enough to bleed, old enough to breed", it's "if she's adult height, she can spend the night." Girls on average finish puberty at 14 but plenty finish puberty at 12. Below 12 is considered precocious puberty.
1
Honestly, that's the only non-arbitrary place to draw the line, since that's generally considered the beginning of adolescence.
1
@AntiFaGoat Exactly, 30 wasn't old back then. If you made it to 30 you'd probably make it another 30 years.

Chris Hansen goes after people who try to get with tweens. That was actually illegal in many ancient societies. Caterina Sforza could not consummate until she was 14.

@nancyomalley9959 Honestly why is two immature minds better than one? This whole idea that age gaps are predatory is just a prejudice brought on by feminism. For 99% of human history if you said the best way to compensate a 13 year old bride's childish and immature mind was with another childish and immature husband, people would look at you like you were insane and then laugh in your face. Take the movie Forest Gump. Does anything Jenny was a predator for having such a more mature intellect than him? Does anyone think he would be better off with another retard as a partner.
