Spongebob has a house, so a lot ironically.

You should try living off of $2.50 a day for a month because that's what half the planet makes.

I think I'm going to be sick. 99% of the world makes less than $32,000 a year and 80% of the world makes less than $10 a day, and both of those statistics are measured in Purchasing Power Parity. Go cry to the barefoot Sri Lankan child living in a one room tin shack sleeping on cardboard about America's wages.

Higher minimum wage means higher rent. That's why Washington DC, the state with the highest minimum wage, has 3X the homelessness rate of its nearest competitor.
3
"Cost of living" varies WAY more within a state than between states.
2
Completely baseless statement. Do you think employers can just pay whatever they want and greed is the only thing that determines your salary? You don't understand basic economics.
2
Yeah and studio apartments are like $3000 in Manhattan.
2
There's absolutely no reason minimum wage should exist. There's no "race to the bottom". Here in Austin minimum wage is $7.25 an hour but even McDonalds pays $13 an hour. Why? Because they can afford to and so can the other businesses around them, and if they didn't those other businesses would eat up all their workers. If basic economics were taught in school, this country would shift to the right so hard we'd fly out the driver side window.

Higher minimum wage makes a better country? Christ alive, you liberals are so willfully ignorant about economics I'm surprised you don't literally suggest we print money to solve poverty.
2
Sweatshops existed due to monopolies, not due to lack of minimum wage laws.
1
Where I live (Austin TX) its $7.25 and yet even Taco Bell pays $11 an hour. If you are paid minimum wage, its for a reason.

@minhtrietvo8448 The defining characteristic of slavery is that its forced. Many slaves in America were paid, haven't you heard of people buying their freedom? And many people who do unpaid labor are not slaves, they are called volunteers or interns.
1
@evilotto9200 So why is it that places which pay the lowest wages (Walmart, McDonalds) etc. always have the cheapest products? Where do you think the price of products come from if not the price of labor used to produce them. Why does crab cost more than rice? Are people who sell crab simply greedier than people who sell rice?

In 1950 the life expectancy was 65, the average family spent 30% of their income on food, and the median house size was less than half what it is today.

Look at the states with the highest minimum wages. Now look at the states with the highest homelessness rates. Now look at the states with the highest unemployment. Notice something?
1
Minimum wage is unnecessary to stop sweatshops when we have competition. 19th century capitalist horrors lay at the feet of monopolies, nothing else. Now we have anti-trust (monopoly) laws. In Austin Texas it's legal to pay someone $7.25 an hour, but even McDonalds pays $10.75. If you want to know the effects of minimum wage, look at the 2019 Tax Foundation study on purchasing power by state. Then look up the minimum wages of those states.
1
@minhtrietvo8448 No, that's called volunteering.
1
@minhtrietvo8448 No, because they pay me. What's your point?
1
Yes, I'm sure people who's entire livelihood depends on running a business right know nothing about the importance of workers. That makes sense. Did you know Walmart's profit margin is 1.1%? For every dollar Walmart makes, the bourgeois only keep a little over one cent for themselves.

@playboicartiismydad4842 Where I live minimum wage is $7.25 and yet even Taco Bell pays $11.00.

Money does not come from some bottomless pit of gold at the end of the rainbow. 2/3rds of all new businesses fail, and big businesses typically run profit margins of less than 5%. Why not just pay people $30,000 a year without requiring them to do anything in return if you want to be "humane"?
1
@MusicLover-ti6zo Erm, really? Do you have anything to back that up? Watch actual media from that time like "Flowers for Algernon" and see how minimum wage workers lived.

Rent control, like any price control, will create shortages.
