The difference in cost of living between states is NOTHING compared to the cost of living differential within states. Compare the cost of an apartment in Darien CT to Bridgeport CT.

If you make $34,000 a year you are literally richer than 99% of the world. People like you make me sick. I would die happily if I could see you explain to a child in Mexico who doesn't even have all the walls on his house why anything less than $22 is an unacceptable wage for you. I used to be so into the idea of charity and helping the truly poor in the world get things like vaccinations and clean drinking water and now I wonder "What's the point"? People here have so much more yet are still so bitter, spoiled, and ingrateful.

If this was 1931 you'd be supporting the Davis-Bacon Act, which was the original minimum wage law and meant to price "cheap colored labor" out of the market.

@Edgedable His "logic" is that slavery has something to do with how much you're paid, which is one of the most logiphobic things you can say. Plenty of slaves in the old US were paid. Haven't you heard of slaves "buying their freedom"? And plenty of unpaid people are not slaves: interns and volunteers. Lincoln lived in a log cabin while Sally Hemmings had her own room, does that mean Sally was free and Lincoln was a slave?

@Edgedable "Wages have been stagnant" is meaningless gobbledygook. Life expectancy, median house size, and the chance of owning pretty much anything has increased significantly over the past 40 years. So obviously that doesn't mean anything real.

The fact people are actually suggesting that show's there's no hope for the human race. If you make $34,000 a year you are literally making more than 99% of the planet. And yet still we cry for ourselves. What a vile, wretched, hopeless race we are. 150 years of human progressive is truly worth nothing because of our bottomless self-pity and ingratitude.

Where do you think price of rent comes from? It's determined by how much people are bidding against you for the property. That's why a studio apartment is $3000 in Manhattan because wages there are crazy high. Raising minimum wage based on "cost of living" is a viscous cycle.

Everything you need to know about minimum wage is summed up in the 2019 Tax Foundation Study on Purchasing Power Parity. Compare how far a dollar goes in Tennessee and Texas (minimum wage $7.25) to New Jersey and New York.

@paulhartson1 Wall Street gets trillions? Source?

@wd8640 Where the hell are you living where taxes are so high!? That's like a 40% tax rate! I didn't even think people making under $40,000 a year paid income taxes.

The fact you think economics is as simple as "more money" = "better life"...Christ, there are no words. Even hundreds of millions of people dying under Communism didn't wake people up.

@jbattle34 Communism tried to distribute everyone's money equally, and the result was everyone's money became worthless. Minimum wage does the same thing, just to a lesser degree. Look at the 2019 Tax Foundation Study on Purchasing Power Parity by state. You're better off making ten dollars in Texas than 13 in New York. You can't equalize people's share of the pie without less pie getting baked. So no, more money does not mean a better life.

@wd8640 Where the PHUCK are you living that taxes are so high!? That's like a 40% tax rate! Here in Texas I don't think you pay anything in taxes that you don't get back on your return if you make $30,000 a year.

The price of everything comes down to the price of labor. Do you think prices just fall out of the sky? Why is a studio apartment in Manhattan $3000 but in Detroit its $300? Because wages are so much higher in Manhattan. Why do you think McDonalds costs so much less than a five star restaurant? Because a 5-star restaurant has to pay its staff more. All the sectors of the economy the poor rely on will get more expensive if you raise minimum wage.

It's amazing billions can suffer and/or die under Communism and the world learns absolutely nothing. Stop parroting the term "living wage." There is no such goddamn thing. Money has no fixed purchasing power. If it did we'd have no reason not to just go outright Communist and split everyone's money equally.

Look at the 2019 Tax Foundation Study of Purchasing Power by state and see how "helpful" high minimum wages are.
