@Cxandra I don't agree with making the age of consent 13, but people like you are perpetuating a viscous cycle. We see how immature the youth are, so we coddle them, then that makes them more immature, then we notice, and then coddle them some more. Even laws that don't effect their lives give us moral permission to treat them like children, expect less of them, and even get them to expect less of themselves. I was a victim of this myself. My parents were great people but they coddled me way too much. I didn't get a job until 23. My parents later told me this is because they thought I was "too immature for a job". Then guess what? I was fired from my first two of three jobs almost immediately, just like teenagers normally are.

I think 13 was their federal age of consent, meaning its the lowest prefectures can set the age of consent. In the United States its actually 12!

Pretty sure 13 was their federal age of consent, meaning their prefectures (states, basically) couldn't set it any lower. In America its actually 12! But of course every state sets it much higher. This was symbolic more than anything.

But what is a child exactly? 18? Should you not be able to be tried as an adult at 16? Drive a car? Attend a shooting range without supervision? Work a job? Stay home without a baby sitter? Cross the street by yourself? We need to abandon this insane idea that adulthood is all or nothing, especially when we all know 18 is an unnatural cut off for adulthood. Every society on the face of this Earth considered you an adult by 16 or younger until K-12 education began.
