Society is completely off the wall these days. All this crying about "power imbalances" and whatever other buzzwords you can come up with is batshit insane. 1) Mental power imbalance: If your daughter was an airhead who made stupid decisions, and she brought home the class valedictorian for dinner, what would you think? Would you think "Oh noes, power imbalance!!! He'll manipulate her!!!" No, you'd think "Oh good, she found someone smart who will keep her out of trouble." There's no way you'd be happier if she was dating another moron. 2) Financial power imbalance: This literally just means the older person has more resources to offer their partner, which makes them less likely to leave. How on God's Green Earth is this a bad thing? It's like calling your boss abusive for raising your salary because it makes you more reluctant to leave your job. Any "power" that can be used for evil in a relationship has a 10X chance of being used for good. Stop these mental gymnastics and just admit it: You're a hypocrite who wants to vilify people for being icky and creepy, while waving your Pride flag and telling people to support relationships that are considered abominations in most of the world.

This power imbalance talk is getting insane. The only power being more financially stable could give you over someone is the power of the carrot. Complaining about that is like complaining about your boss controlling your by raising your salary, because that makes you more reluctant to leave.

Yes. It's young women who are the most judgemental about age gaps, the same people waving the Pride flag and telling me homosexual polyamory is beautiful and should be celebrated. This is why even though I don't hate teh gheyz I find a bizarre joy in watching Pride Flags burn.

As creepy as this sounds, the fact that prepubescent crushes exist suggests nature already has a mechanism in place for identifying your mate before they've gone through puberty.

Stop with this non-sense of "power imbalance." It's a vague, abstract boogie man who use to vilify people for being icky and creepy. When two people commit a crime, we never even consider this power imbalance crap if the two perps happen to be of different ages. You're either old enough to know what you're doing or you aren't. Besides, since when was the best things for a stupid, immature mind another stupid, immature mind. In every other situation we feel precisely the opposite.

If it involves a "literal child", the age gap shouldn't be a problem. When do you think "literal children" should be sexually active with each other? Though both are wrong, society seemed to work a lot better when older men married 14 year old girls (1950s) than when we encouraged 14 year olds to screw each other (1970s).

@catguy4996 Amber Heard ring any bells?

Stop with this "power dynamic" non sense. What does that even mean? Mental power? There's no other situation where we think the best thing for a stupid, immature mind, is another stupid, immature mind. If your daughter was an airhead and she brought home the class valedictorian for dinner, you wouldn't say "Oh noes, power imbalance!" You'd say "Oh good, someone smart and well put together who will keep her out of trouble." Financial power? The only financial power someone could have over someone else in a relationship is the power of the carrot. That's like complaining about your boss exercising power over you by raising your salary and thus making your more reluctant to leave your job.

@catguy4996 I'd bet people would be far more disgusted with homosexuality than they are with a 45 year old man dating an 18 year old girl if both were equally mainstreamed and celebrated by society. Why do other people's revulsion to your relationship matter?
1
What the hell does feeling your youth was stolen have to do with a "power imbalance"?
1
Maybe 11 year olds shouldn't having children with ANYONE? Stop with this "power dynamic" nonsense. If every other situation we consider the presence of an older, wiser person a good thing.

The word "groomed" no longer has a meaning.

That is complete and utter BS. The problem with young people isn't that you can tell them what to do, it's that you can't tell them anything. Anyone who's worked with teenagers know this. They're always the ones who disrespect the boss. They're always the people who ignore the advice of those older and wiser than them. And they're always the one's who are quick to get aggressive rather than try to understand things from someone else's perspective. This whole thing about "manipulation" is just an excuse we use to vilify people for being icky and creepy. Men go for younger women because of a little something called evolution. Women's infertility, birth mortality rates, and chances of having a baby with a birth defect skyrockets from 25 onwards.

@fatimahanwaar306 Your bastardization of the term pedophilia is disgusting. Pedophilia is wrong because prepubescent children shouldn't be having sex, not because of age gaps.
1
@fatimahanwaar306 Oh STFU, by your logic all heterosexuality is misogynist, since the reason men tend to be heterosexual obviously evolved from the fact they can make babies with women. Yes, male fertility is connected to age but not nearly to the same extent. There is no male menopause, and the genetic health of the offspring is far more connected to the age of the mother.
1
@olganova3058 Oh right, that's gross but a homosexual pup-fetish orgy is beautiful and should have its own float at the Pride parade.
1
@olganova3058 I'm sure you love waving around your Pride Flag, right?
1
@jasonhaven7170 And what reason is that?

This power imbalance stuff is getting insane. What power does your husband have over you based on being your doctor? The fact that he could refuse to treat you if you broke up with him? Go find another doctor. Any power that could be used for evil in a relationship has a 10X higher chance of being used for good.
1
@ttiger86 Because two immature minds dating each other is a sure recipe for success, right?
1
@fatimahanwaar306 Whether someone is old enough to understand their acts doesn't matter? Better get rid of the drinking age, voting age, driving age, etc. then.
1
@fatimahanwaar306 Go back to waving your Pride Flag and telling us how polyamorous homosexaul dog fetishists need to be celebrated.
1
@stephaniewilliams6756 The fact that we even talk about this "power imbalance" shit is insane. The kind of "power" an older partner would have (financial stability, wisdom) has 10X as a high a chance of being used for good as for evil. The unwise always benefit from being around the wise, the poor always benefit from being amicable with the rich, etc. I can't believe the kind of mental gymnastics society is doing these days.

People manipulate people. If young people are so vulnerable to being mind controlled by older people, why is it parents can almost never get through to their teenagers? And that's age gap of 30 years (usually), not 5 years, and the biggest "power imbalance" you can imagine. My cousin married a bride about his age who turned him into a COVID nut. I had a "friend" in Middle School who played me and everyone around him like a fiddle for his sadistic amusement (getting me to reveal my school password to him, stealing from my locker and then framing someone else, getting a friend to reveal his crush, etc.). People manipulate people. Age has little to do with it.

@fatimahanwaar306 The Age-IPV Curve: Changes in Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration during Adolescence and Young Adulthood To present results parsimoniously, we group age into four categories covering four years each. For male youth, IPV perpetration increased from 13% at 13–16 years to 19% at 17–20 years. This is followed by subsequent decreases at 21–24 years (15%) and 25–28 years (10%). [...] The age pattern for general antisocial behavior displayed a curvilinear pattern similar to the one for IPV perpetration among adolescent boys and young men increasing slightly from 30% at 13–16 years to 33% at 17–20 years followed by decreases at 21–24 years (25%) and 25–28 years (18%).
