  1. No one talks about how Iraq was a perfect lesson in perverse incentives. Every dead Iraqi civilian was blamed on America, whether we pulled the trigger or our mortal enemies did. This gave insurgents factions reason to sow as much carnage as possible: bombing power stations, blowing up bridges, carbombing public markets, etc. Then Iraqis would get angry, blame America, join the insurgency, and kill the people who were trying to hunt the terrorists down, which of course made it even easier for the terrorists to operate and kill more Iraqis. It created a giant snowball effect. I'm convinced The Dark Knight was actually an Iraq War parallel, since it was all about how the Joker could turn Gotham against Batman with his own atrocities.

  2. Actually it made perfect sense. Every death the Iraqis inflicted on each other in sectarian violence was blamed on Americans. Every act of carnage against civilians by outlaw factions became their propaganda victory. How else do you explain such bizarre events as the July Soccer Bombings, which seemed to target no one in particular and were just to "get attention"? Insurgents knew the world would blame America for their atrocities, so it was in their interests to kill as many innocent Iraqis as possible.

    1
