Actually it does, we treat every crime more leniently if the perp is young. As for non-offending 40 year olds there's plenty of compassion for them.

Many pedophiles are themselves abuse victims. Pedophilia is such a tragic disease. I don't want to downplay this with a tacky comment, but it reminds me of a real life version of vampirism.

Pedophilia is sexual attraction to prepubescent children. Were you attracted to 6 year olds when you were 15? If you were, I'd be you still are.

I think the harm done by murder is more self-evident than the harm done by the p-word. I could see how some, especially young and impressionable, could trick them to thinking the harm pedophilia causes is just a societal fairy-tale.

What a bizarre comment. pedophilia is not an "idea", it's a ravenous desire. You can't get someone to molest children just by putting the idea in their head, and I think every 15 year old on Earth knows what molesting a child is. Do you really think a 13 year old boy would touch children just because his parents told him to, and then never bring that up when he was getting institutionalized?

If that were pedophilia, then yes, all 15 year old boys would be pedophiles. But what 99% of people know but often pretend not to is that pedophilia is attraction to prepubescent children. Puberty happens for a reason and its abnormal to lust after prepubescent children at any age.

Pedophilia is attraction to prepubescent children. There are two types of adulthood: 1) Biological adulthood, which is how we'd measure adulthood in every other species. When the animal becomes fertile, gets the urge to mate, reaches its adult height and shape, etc. 2) Legal/philosophical adulthood, which is when society thinks you are old enough to deserve full freedom and accountability. Today this is usually 18, but for most of human history it was far closer to phase 1. Pedophilia is attraction to people who haven't reached stage 1. Many people like to pretend puberty happens for no reason and then some magical, invisible switch that slipped under the radar of every human society prior to about 100 years ago flips at 18, but that's not the case.

One thing that really made me angry was reading this line on wikipedia: "A person must be at least 16 years old, and at least five years older than the prepubescent child, for the attraction to be diagnosed as pedophilia." Supposedly this is the criterion in the DSM-V. According to the DSM-V, there's nothing wrong with this kid because he's under 16. What the heck is wrong with people these days? Has all common sense left the planet? It is absolutely not normal to be randy for 6 year old girls when you are 15, and chances are those feelings aren't going to stop when you turn 16!
