I don't think that's what they're saying, they just phrased it in a really callous or tone deaf way. I think what they are saying is pedophilia (meaning the desire, not the acts) is not a choice and should be treated with compassion, the way we treat people who struggle with psychotic desires with compassion.

@cordulam We haven't learned anything new about child development. 18 is a biologically meaningless number. Pedophilia means sex with or attraction to pre-adolescent children and that is a taboo as old as history. Ancient Rome, a pervert's paradise, still made it felony to do with a boy under 14 or girl under 12. When the term "pedophilia" was first written down it referred to children under 14. Really it takes some incredible nerve to bash the LGBT movement for ignoring gender in regards to who you're allowed to bang, and then go on and ignoring puberty. That's every bit as willfully blind to the natural order of things.

I think the people speaking just framed what they were trying to say really poorly and callously. Here's a better version: "Pedophilia is not an action, but a horrible mental disorder that plagues many people at no fault of their own. Their urges are not their fault, and just as we treat someone who seeks help for psychotic urges with compassion, we should treat someone who seeks treatment for pedophilic urges with compassion as well." Remember, many pedophiles are former victims.

I think they just phrased what they were trying to say in a really tone deaf way. The message was (or should have been) that pedophilia (not the action but the lust) is a horrific mental disorder that no one chooses to be afflicted with, and we should treat those who struggle with such desires with compassion. If you go to a psychologist and say you have an overwhelming urge to kill and/or rape people, they give you treatment. Why can't people who lust after children be treated the same?

@suran396 13 is the federal age of consent in Japan, meaning no jurisidctions can set it lower than that. In America its 12. But obviously in effect its 16 - 18.

@cordulam But homosexuality has led to us ignoring the natural order of things. We kid ourselves and say pedophilia (the real thing, not the modern bastardization of the term) is wrong because kids can't consent. While that's part of it, it's not the whole of it. A horse is as dumb as a 1 year old child, but is a horse put to stud being abused?

Don’t say pedophilia is sex with minors. It’s sex with pre-adolescent children, usually under 12. I’m sure everyone here knows 18 as a cut off for adulthood existed in no society prior to about 100 years ago and has no basis in biology. I’m not a fan of sex with underage teens but turning one of the oldest and most common sense taboos into something arbitrary as the drinking age makes me sick.

@HassanSanem Pedophilia can refer to desires or actions. OP is referring to desires. A proper parallel would be "Not all people plagued with rape fantasies are criminals", which would be correct.

Tatum is pretending like pedophilia just means sex with minors. It doesn’t. It’s sex acts with prepubescent children, in other words people who are children by a biological definition and not some number someone pulled out of their ass 100 years ago and we’ve worshipped ever since. How is ignoring puberty any less perverted than ignoring gender? @TheCharleseye I'm not saying child molesters shouldn't be punished severely, but pedophilia is unique in that many people think the desires alone make you evil. You saw this a lot when this discussion first started coming into the limelight around five years ago. Violent, psychotic desires, while just as harmful if not more so, are not treated this way.

They're going to skip right over 13 - 17 because pedophiles don't find that demographic attractive. I already see this happening now. I'm sick of people playing dumb and pretending they don't understand what puberty (and by extension, true pedophilia) is. If anything is legitimizing pedophilia, it's this attitude, making it seem as cultural and arbitrary as the drinking age.

@TheTracepyott I can't stand the nerve of people who pretend to care about nature/God but ignore puberty. How is that any different than ignoring gender (homosexuality/bisexuality)? I don't think it should be free season on teenage minors but pretending its the same as a pre-adolescent child is so disingenuous.

The thing is, though, society DOES offer people with rape desires compassion. I remember one of my psychology professors told me about his client who confessed that when he saw women he wanted to, and I quote, "butt f*** them and slit their throats". He was ashamed of this, but rather than dismiss him as evil and say he should be put to death, he gave him therapy (or at least I assume he did). I think that's what the speakers are trying to say, they just phrased it in a really tone deaf or callous way. Pedophilia is unique in that its the only desire that people will think you are evil for having it, whether you act on it or not.

I think that's the point though. Many non-offending pedophiles are dismissed as evil for their desires alone and therefore CAN'T go see a psychiatrist.
