It messed me up so much I gave up on friendship after that became a loner during High School. I retreated into online communities of mostly adults, yet even looking back I don't feel in the slightest they could have made me their thrall simply by being older. Parents can't even control their 15 year old daughter more than her peers, no way a 17 year old could have Jedi mind-control powers over a 20 year old just by being three years older. If you're too young to date an adult, you're too young to date period. Even when I was in Middle School I thought it was weird people were dating.

Teen pregnancy was treated like the public health crisis of the century from 1970 to 2000, even though 90% of the times it was teens impregnating each other. Yet we encourage teenagers coupling, while ruthlessly vilify them dating adults even though we're constantly hearing stories about how 14 and 20 year olds would marry in our grandparents day and then live happily ever after. In any other facet of society, we would say two immature brains is worse than one. Don't give me that "power imbalance", malarkey. There's no where else in society we EVEN CONSIDER that type of thinking. If you told people 16 year olds should be able to sign business contracts, but only with someone who's no more than 4 years older, they'd think you'd gone insane. You're either old enough to make informed decisions or you're not.

The most abusive relationships I had was in Middle School with a "friend" who would play with people for his sick kicks (getting me to reveal my school password, stealing from my locker and framing someone else). It messed me up so bad I became a loner in High School. Then I retreated into MMO communites that were mostly adults and I didn't get the slightest sense they could manipulate me just by being older. Quite the opposite: there was a lot of inter-personal drama and I made many enemies for not letting other people tell me how to think and act. Again, if you applied this "two-tiered consent" idea anywhere else, like you said "16 year olds can sign business contracts, but only with people within 4 years of their age", people would think you were insane. Besides, in the 1950s and 1960s it was very normal for guys 20+ to marry girls 17 - 14, and society was working just fine. Then in the 1970s that trend was replaced with teenagers screwing each other, and that created a public health crisis we spent 30 years trying to curb. So why do we encourage the latter behavior but virulently condemn the former?

Research shows men 17 - 20 are twice as likely to abuse their partners as men 25 - 28, yet its the creepy older men we worry about. The only two arguments I've heard for this double standard is the "power imbalance" and "they have nothing in common". Power imbalance is bullshit: parents can't even control their 15 year old daughters more than her peers. And "they have nothing in common" is bullshit because if you've worked at a restaurant where a lot of employees are in High School, you see platonic friendships forming between High Schoolers and people well out of college all the time.

My sister was 31 and became friends with a 16 year old girl at her gym; she didn't even realize it until she was invited to her 17th birthday party.

But yes, by any logical standard, its worse for minors to do each other than a legal adult. A legal adult's marginally greater capability to manipulate is far outweighed by the benefits their superior wisdom and character brings. If your daughter was an airhead, and brought home the class Valedictorian for dinner, would you say "Oh noes, power imbalance!!!!!111 He's going to manipulate her!" Or would you say "Phew! I'm glad she has a boyfriend with a good head on his shoulders to keep her out of trouble!" The problem is we live in a society that doesn't care about logic, just the arbitrary whims of women. The only counter-argument I can see to this is that relationships with large age gaps have higher divorce rates. But lesbian relationships have higher divorce rates than heterosexual marriages but no one is allowed to use that to argue against lesbian marriages.

These laws make some sense: would you throw two seventeen year olds in jail for simultaneously raping each other if they have sex? If they're almost the same age that's almost the same thing. 2) 17 year olds are regularly tried and sentenced as adults for crimes. Adulthood is not all or nothing. What next, no staying home without a baby sitter until you're 18?
