Or that I'm not a Texan because my parents are from New England.

Saying she's not Japanese because her parents are from Ukraine is like saying I'm a lawyer because my dad is a lawyer.

Do you think every Ms. South Carolina was born in the state.

These comments make me sick. Napoleon's parents were from Italy, yet no one questions when he is called French. She's not Japanese by race, but Japan is a nation and she is a Japanese citizen. By culture and nationality she is Japanese. Why does everyone magically lose the ability to distinguish race from culture and nationality when dealing with countries that weren't founded by White people?

It's disgusting. People are individuals. Saying she's not Japanese because of her heritage...does heritage, or even birth place, determine whether you can be an American? A Texan? A New Yorker? Napoleon's parents were Italian, so was he not French?

Do you think every Ms. South Carolina was born in South Carolina?

Try defining a European nationality by blood and see what happens.

@durrclips746 Both are jurisdictions. What's the difference? Also she's lived in Japan since she was 5.

@takosdon7754 She's a citizen. What do we call someone who's received citizenship? NATIONALIZED. So how is her nationality not Japanese. Besides, who let you make these rules.

@MrsB197something So what? Do you think every Ms. West Virginia or Ms. Texas was born in the state?

We already had a half-Black Ms. Japan.

@mckendrick7672 . I’d love to see you say this about a European country, that some people are more entitled to call it home based on their DNA.

Do you think every Ms. America was born in America? Why can Brown people represent Scandinavia in the Olympics and an Iranian can win Ms. Germany but she can't be Ms. Japan?

@beepbop6697 Blood is not culture.

If my grandfather is a farmer, that doesn't make me a farmer. So why should her heritage disqualify her from being Japanese? You could make the case she wasn't born in Japan and therefore isn't Japanese but I don't have to be born in Texas to be called a Texan.

@beepbop6697 The Olympics uses foreign born athletes all the time.

@Spubbily01 I seriously doubt every Ms. America was born in America.
