Technology means people keep living longer and longer. If you keep the retirement age stagnant, people aren't getting what they paid into the system. If you worked from 20 - 65, you may have been paying for retirees who lasted on average 7 years on the system. Yet when you retire, you might last 14 years. So you paid for 7 years, got 14. That's not simply getting what you paid into the system.

Yet you don't see French people immigrating in mass to China. Sort of like you don't see Americans hopping the border to Mexico to get their free healthcare. Maybe because deep down everyone knows that government handouts aren't what makes a country a great place to live. Thank you but I'd rather live in a country where the money I earn can buy something, rather than one where the currency is devalued by government sponsored laziness.

@tigading2177 Study after study after study shows working is a key ingredient of happiness, maybe the most important one. In France, you can easily retire at 50 if you're willing to live like the average person in China. Just be aware the GDP per capita in China is less than half what it is in France.
2
There's really no hope for the world. Why should being able to do nothing while living on someone else's dime ever be a human right? 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day but here you are crying you can no longer spend 1/3rd of your adult life life sitting on your ass doing nothing while something else pays for your first world life style.
2
Right because the money that retirees live off of just comes from gumdrop trees in candyland.
2
Yes, because I totally see French immigrants flooding to Bangladesh.

@LyonHeart888 Doctors and lawyers will pay 20X more into these kind of programs while getting no more out of it than anyone else. How is that not a handout? It's like if we pool our money to buy a pizza, and I pay $19 dollar and you pay $1 but we both get 4 slices.
1
@LyonHeart888 China is 82 according to the World Population Review's Study on happiness. France is 21. The United States is 19.
1
@LyonHeart888 Who is 18 and up? All countries with very high GDPs. Also I gave you a source. You can easily search it yourself. I can't post a link or my comment gets auto-blocked.
1
@LyonHeart888 Per capita? Yes, many of them do. I never said there was a perfect correlation between GDP per capita and happiness, but there's certainly much more of a correlation than there is between free handouts and happiness.

Christ alive, man, we live in a world where we spend almost 1/3rd of our lifetimes being taken care of by someone else (first during our 18-22 years of education, then 65 - 80 as retirees). That would have been unthinkable for 99% of human history. Yet people still care crying about how hard they have it. Western greed is simply bottomless.
1
@user-gz4ve8mw9l Oh boo fucking hoo. There's a line of people that would stretch to the moon to take your place in America. Western decadence and greed is unbelievable. If America is so horrible, why do we have to build a wall to keep people out, on the border of a country which ITSELF had to build a wall to keep people from (Guatemalans), and then get accused for violating human rights for doing so?
1
@socialanarchy081 A study by no less than the Washington Post showed police are more reluctant to fire on black suspects.

Imagine living in a country where it takes less than 20 minutes of labor for your most poorly paid worker to afford a loaf of bread, where the GDP per capita gives you more than 3X the purchasing power of the average global citizen, yet thinking you're part of the starving proletariat masses fighting the rich and powerful because now someone will only pay you not to work for the last 16 year of your life rather than the last 18 years of your life. Christ alive, man. Can you even begin to imagine what your ancestors who fought just to be able to afford a baguette a day must be thinking of you.
1
...of Venezuela
1
Why should being able to spend 1/3rd of your adult life being taken care of by other people like an overgrown baby ever be a human right? Christ alive, Western greed and decadence has no bounds.
1
What does "freedom" even mean to you? You've turned that into a completely meaningless word. Since when is forcing people to labor on your behalf (where do you think this pension money comes from) freedom? There's a term for that but its not freedom.
1
How is thinking "DURR HURR HURR MOAR FREE MONEYZ LOLOLOLOLOL!" being awake? That's literally the depth of the left's philosophy on economics.
1
@ComradeHoey Prove me wrong. I've honestly never seen a leftist who thought more deeply about it than that.
1
@ComradeHoey BTW I don't like to be a rude but I honestly don't know how else to get the left to look in the mirror, because that's quite literally the depth of their thought process of this kind of thing.
1
@ComradeHoey If you make $35,000 or more you're in the top 1% of the world economy. You are the rich. And yes, if we all hit the streets, we'd shut them down. We'd also shut down ourselves because we'd shut down the production of literally everything which means we'd all starve to death or die of illness because there'd be no food or medicine because those things don't fall out of the sky.
1
Saddle your children with more debt to be paid off with their tax dollars because you don't feel like working when you're old?
1
How is "MOAR FREE MONEYZ LOLOLOLOL" smart? Because that's literally the depth of how the left sees economics.
1
So now government officials are the template for the average citizen? I guess every American is entitled to a big white mansion, their own private jet, and a personal chef like the President then.
1
1793: Fight because the masses are starving and can barely afford a loaf of bread a day. 2023: Fight because you can't spend 1/3rd of your adult life sitting on your ass being taken care of by someone else like a big baby.
1
The left: We should love and look after our fellow man! France: Okay, fam, I'm just going to need you to work another couple of years so the next generation doesn't have such an extravagant debt to pay off. The left: REEEEEEEEEE!
1
The left: We all should look out for our fellow man! Also the left: I'm going to saddle my children with more of our crippling national debt because I don't feel like working once I hit 62.
1
If you make $35,000 or more a year you are in the top 1% of the world economy. Hypocrite.
1
Yes, how beautiful it is to rally together so that your children can pay exorbitant taxes to ensure you sit on your ass doing nothing from 62 onwards.
1
@raymundogonzalez6450 If America is so horrible, please tell me why we have to build a wall to keep people out, on the border of a country that itself has to build a wall to keep people out (Mexico has a huge wall on its Southern border with Guatemala), and then get accused of violating human rights for doing so.
1
@briangriffin6224 If you make $35,000+ a year you are in the top 1% of the world economy. You probably make more than that but have never given a cent to help your fellow man. All this "viva la revolucion" crap makes me sick. It's like watching little kids play in costume.
1
@skeltdawg2938 No. Do you see Americans jumping the border to Mexico for their free healthcare and paid maternity leave?
1
@stephanedaguet915 🤢 Where do you think the money to pay for retirees pensions comes form? A magical pot of gold at the end of a rainbow? It comes from other people's labor. You're demanding someone else pay for your upkeep with their labor for 1/3rd of your life and yet calling capitalism slavery?
1
@Nerwesta "the US is looting Central and South America for ages, it is perceived as it's backyard." I'm sure you feel like a real badass who's sticking it to the man by saying that, but even you probably don't know what you mean by any of it.
1
@jeffbrewer1580 Yes because the money to pay for these programs just comes from jelly-bean trees in Candyland.
1
@jeffbrewer1580 How much do you think it costs to pay for 2 years of retirement for every citizen? I'm sure those stimulus payments are pocket change compared to that.
1
@jeffbrewer1580 Isn't the whole point of social programs is to ensure some people get more from the system than they pay into it? What else would they be for? Why give the government $10 just to get $10 back. Now you suddenly have a problem with that? As long as there's any government funded retirement, doctors and lawyers will spend 20X more into systems like this then they'll ever get out. But only now the injustice of people getting less out of the system than they pay into it bothers you?
1
@jeffbrewer1580 If you make $35,000 a year or more you are in the top 1% of the world economy. You probably make more than this yet I doubt you've ever given a cent to charity.
1
@jeffbrewer1580 If you can understand how blessed you are, how are you not disgusted by the hypocritical decadence of Western leftism?
1
If you make $35,000 or more a year, you are in the top 1% of the world economy. But keep crying about rich people.
1
3 billion people in the world live on less than $2.50 a day but they're rioting they can no longer spend 1/3rd of their adult life being taken care of by someone else. Christ.
1
Isn't slavery the system where someone else is forced to work for your upkeep? Do you think the money retirees live on comes from thin air? How do you not see the irony in this comment?
1
@jutru8782 Except how much you pay into doesn't effect how much you can take out when you retire. If you're a doctor or lawyer you're going to pay way more into the system them you get out of it. I mean isn't that the whole point of Social Programs? You wouldn't give $10 to the government just to get $10 back, that makes no sense. Also when people live longer and and longer due to technology, everyone who retires is getting more from the system than they paid into it.
1
Inhuman? Jesus Herbert Walker Christ, it's inhuman that people can no longer spend 1/3rd of their adult life being taken care of someone else like a big baby, while 3 billion people on Earth are living on less than $2.50 a day? Is there anything you leftist won't declare a human right?
1
@stephenlock7236 Work like slaves? A slave is someone forced to on behalf of someone else. Where do you think retirees get their retirement funds from. Jelly bean trees in Candyland? You call working for your own upkeep slavery, but working for someone else's isn't? For God's sake, it was only half a century ago the average French citizen worked 2,000 hours a year (now its about 1,500), and died about 10 years earlier. No matter how good you have it, you'll always cry about how you're entitled to more.
1
@stephenlock7236 What everyone wants is to be able to live like kings without doing any work. Guess what, the world doesn't look like that. Christ alive, I would give anything just to show you how your ancestors even 100 years ago lived. Even the average nobleman of Europe 1000 years ago would not hesitate to trade places with the typical "poor" Westerner of today.
1
Christ alive, people like you don't have the slightest idea what a paradise capitalism has created for you. For 99% of human history, the average person lived in a one room hut, saw 2/3rds of their kids die before reaching age 4, worked 6 or 7 days a week and could purchase little more than a loaf of bread a day with their earnings, and if they were lucky enough to make it to retirement age, the might live for three or four years "retired" before they croaked. Even the nobility of Europe from 1000 years ago would not hesitate to trade place with the average poor Westerner today, but thanks to people like you, humanity will never be happy.
1
@stephanedaguet915 Translation: I hate capitalism because I have absolutely nothing else to compare it to.
