  1. That ‘middle class’ bit is nonsense. Before the welfare state it was the poor who had the strongest families. If you look at Renaissance Italy for instance, it was the rich who were always popping out illegitimate children. Also contrary to popular belief the poverty rate in the 1950s was much higher than it was today. Look up the stats.
