It's because early Tesla models sold in the US exclusively used Japanese, specifically Panasonic batteries (who also uses components from Japanese suppliers). The most expensive component is the battery module, so Chinese EV makers are cutting costs by using lower quality less reliable batteries. Currently, there is no other way to manufacture an electric vehicle for sales price range of US$ 15,000-20,000. (Tesla's replacement battery costs US$12,000 - 20,000)
