Russian Far East has always imported second-hand Japanese domestic cars because of geographic proximity. Actually, there are quite a few Russians living in Japan who're involved in the export/import business. They participate in Japanese car auctions and buy the cars that are popular in Russia. One can purchase a perfectly functioning 10-15 year-old car in Japan for roughly 1/2 to 1/3 of a new car price. Shipping from Japan to Vladivostok is only a 48 hour journey. Japan has a very strict vehicle inspection requirement for every 2 years, so Japanese domestic cars are generally in pristine condition, and repair parts are widely available.
