  1. Obviously, it's not a former English colony. I really enjoyed by business trips to China. The food, architecture, gardens, tea, traditional art, the scenery was wonderful. But again, I can read/write KANJI and there were always Japanese speakers in Shanghai from hotels to restaurants to airports. I remember having done all the hotel check-in entirely in Japanese while I was there. The company arranged the car and interpreter for that day, so I just had to sit and be driven around the Shanghai. While I studied Chinese in college as a second foreign-language, I never really had the need to speak in Chinese...except for bargaining in local gift shops. And even that I used my hand signs more than my mouth.
