Sir, just one advice from somebody who struggled with both English/Japanese growing up. If you're going to live outside of Japan, please make sure your kids learn Japanese language/culture from your wife. It will make life so much easier and fun when they grow up. It'll also keep them connected to their families in Japan. It will open a lot of career opportunities too.

You will flip out if you knew that southern parts of the Korean peninsula were speaking Japonic languages in ancient times. The dialect, the DNA, culture...I'm sure even Koreans can see the dialect and genetic continuum from North to South.

I've worked with a few Nikkei-Brazilians, Nikkei-Peruvians, Nikkei-Americans who have completely integrated to Japanese society. Their children are educated in Japan and work in Japan like any other Japanese. I also know many who live in an expat bubble. We offer special visa schemes for those with Japanese ancestry, because we have historically perceived them as overseas Japanese. However, that image and hope was altered when we encountered many Nikkei-Brazilians in the 1980s and 1990s. Only after 2 or 3 generations, some of them completely lost basic understanding of Japanese language, culture, or norms. Some of them had absolutely no respect or interest in learning Japanese laws and following Japanese customs. My experience is that Japanese society or Japanese people will accept you as long as you become comfortable in the language/culture.

I've never been to Yokosuka for that reason. I always thought Yokosuka was uncivilized and dangerous because of US military presence and all the baggage it brings.
