  1. Huge deposits of oil and gas were confirmed around 2010. Four years later, Putin annexed Crimea but did nothing about the oil deposits. He then fomented a civil war in the Eastern areas where yet more oil and gas has ben found. He's now tried to invade the whole country but he's stalled (or maybe just stopped) over the oil resource areas. Ukraine has existing oil and gas pipelines into Europe. Putin wants them to continue carrying Russian oil/gas at prices set by Putin. So he's invaded, flattened the cities, smashed the infrastructure and stolen the people to work in Russia. He has no intention of restoring the country. It's all about a gangster taking out a potential new competitor. That oil will stay in the ground until Putin's forces are fully thrown out.
