  1. Maybe Putin looked at the success of KGB/FSB infiltration into Germany and assumed their military incapability and energy dependence on Russia would cause them to instantly back down when he invaded Ukraine.

  3. It’s significant that the areas of Ukraine invaded are all home to recently discovered oil and gas reserves. It’s highly likely that Putin wanted that competition stopped. Just as he’s done with the various “…stans” they had to be slapped down.
