  1. The English deep coal mines of South Derbyshire always struggled to be viable. The old pits caused great environmental damage with subsistence and heaps of waste rock. Closure of the old pits led to the resources being open-cast mined. The coal was quickly taken out and the holes filled in again. They proved just how damaging the old methods really were.

  2. EU is built around the Common Agricultural Policy put in place to support the notoriously inefficient French farmers. Ukraine agriculture output was more than half of the EU output. EU can’t accommodate a shift of that size.
