  1. British media pretty much ignored Chechnya and the Baltics, though Poland and Lec Walenska’s Solidarnosc union were covered. Sadly they always (and still do) treated Russian media as giving reputable information, while everyone else was/is unreliable.

  3. Putin’s Russia is not especially interested in capturing mineral resources at the peripheral states. They have more than enough of everything for which they want at least a local monopoly. Crimping Chechnya, Ukraine or anyone else is all about keeping their products off the world markets.
