There were plenty of speed bumps in the 1980s and even more potholes.

Nancy Jervis you have eloquently said what I was about to write this is one of the best History Guy has done.

A modern president would be surrounded by so many Gerard Butlers he’d never get access to a potential assassin.

UK has the largest onshore oil field in Western Europe at Wych Farm near Southampton. Discovered in 1973. We can be sure today’s government would never allow it to be exploited. Production peaked at 110,000 barrels per day. It’s currently at 50,000 barrels per day plus methane and LPG.

The British 6 pounder anti tank gun was an amazing weapon. Lindybeige tells the story of how an artillery group did huge damage during the second battle of El Alamein. The same gun with Mohlins auto loader was used in the Tsetse Mosquito for punching holes through U-Boats.

The period 900 to 1300 is known as the Medieval Warm Period. The climate was so benign that Vikings were crossing the Atlantic and had colonies on Greenland. The switch to colder weather shut down this activity. European human activity would have been similarly affected. These storms were the start of great changes that lasted until late C19th with the current warming period. Incidentally, the Roman Empire coincided with a 400 year warm period. The subsequent “Dark Ages” were colder.

British merchant sailors were paid until the end of their voyage. If their ship sank they pay stopped. Despite a 25% chance of dying in service there has never been an official recognition of their bravery. Wikipedia says Recognizing the inadequate recognition of the bravery of merchant seamen the London-based shipping insurers Lloyd's of London, privately produced a decoration for gallantry which became known as Lloyds War Medal for Bravery and quickly became a very highly respected award.

Medics bury their mistakes.

In1976, engine tuner David Vizard built an Austin Mini optimised for fuel efficiency and more power http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/topic/243226-david-vizard-1275gt-around-america-economy-drive-1976/ We did not need silly ultra light fibreglass bodge to save on fuel. We simply needed motor manufacturers to adjust their existing designs.

Stainless welders need special air extraction or breathing equipment as the chrome vapour is harmful to lungs. TIG is less of a problem as the weld is protected with inert gas but the issues still apply if you are doing it all day.

The SR71 flew as high and fast as the XB70 but was never shot down. However it did have hybrid turbo-ramjet engines.

The British had the Mosquito a very fast twin engine two man aircraft that could carry 4000 pounds of bombs to Berlin. USA sent five times as many med in heavily defended but lumbering B-7s which also carried just 4000lbs of bombs. What a shame that the fast lightly armed approach was not taken.both by USA and U.K.

U.K. school history is so removed from today’s world it’s no wonder that students are bored and quickly drop the subject.

Radioactive particles within the body is extremely nasty leading to cancer at the contaminated site. Not to mention that heavy metals are all chemically toxic. Actual irradiation by ionising radiation is much less nasty. Get enough and it will kill you - horribly. However the people of Ramsar in Iran get annual doses of 230 mSv with no ill effects. The maximum occupational dose is just 20mSv. It’s no surprise there’s confusion when more than 11x the “safe” dose is not killing people.

Deep sea fish have a slow metabolism and long generation periods. That original coelacanth could have been many decades old.

The story of B24 Shady Lady would be a great subject for History Guy.

Horologist 1994 is a sick passenger really the airline’s fault? At least they cleaned it out before the next flight.

Mike Hersee saving face or simply not rocking the boat was far more common 50 years ago.

Thomas Paine air gets sucked OUT of a leaking doo seal. The draught was probably ventilators working normally.

I was going to ask if this was associated with the Krakatoa eruption. But that came two years later and created the year with no summer. Double whammy.

Though Nelson screwed up at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The people did not want British rule and the Spanish navy wasn’t letting go any time soon.

Have you covered the 1944 “Fauld Camp” explosion in Staffordshire, England? About 4000 tons of bombs and ammunition exploded digging a crater that’s visible today.

The US Navy had amazing damage control teams and systems which saved many men and ships. The Japanese Navy actively discouraged independent thought amongst the ratings. Not surprisingly, their damage control was woeful by comparison.

Why do we use stainless steel in space? It’s heavy stuff and not especially strong and space is a vacuum so there can’t be any oxidation.

Brunel wanted to use pozolanic (Roman) cement because it cures under water. It very existence allowed the ancient Roman Empire to build its huge infrastructure of roads and water supplies.

Stainless steel exhaust pipes last indefinitely but the very hot header pipes will corrode though much more slowly than carbon steel. Coal fire power plant boilers use stainless in the superheat tubes. The furnace walls water tubes often corrode on the fire side but the height (120ft) cannot cope with the higher expansion rate of stainless. The solution was co-extruded tube with stainless on the outside and mild steel inside. That solved the tube expansion and the corrosion problems.

Suggestion for future video. The Bell X-1 was always sold as an all American design. But it actually had a forerunner in the form of Miles M.52. In 1943 Miles were tasked with an aircraft capable of 1000mph for 1000 miles. In 1946 almost ready to fly, the project was cancelled. At that point nobody had exceeded speed of sound in level flight. The M.52 had a cockpit pod that doubled as intake spike for the turbo jet engine. The pod sat on explosive bolts for separation if the pilot needed to escape. Compare it to the air launched rocket powered Bell X-1 and tell me they are not closely related.

Brian Shul’s book is hard to find. US printed first editions are now well over $1000.

@antlerking69 Telescope is so good you can see a virus on the moon. ;)

Prevailing winds over UK and Western Europe blow from the South West.

When we look at the Romance languages with their phonetic pronunciation they use vowel sounds more like northern England. The soft vowels of south east England just sound uneducated. The girls name Anna would be said Ahner ( are you listening Disney?).

USS Franklin showed the value of armoured flight decks used by the British Royal Navy.

So many say, “don’t bore me with the history”. They have clearly not seen The History Guy.

Medical evidence clearly shows that Vitamin D is hugely important for a correctly working immune system. When D is low the system is slow to respond allowing infections (especially viral) to get out of control then the system hyper-reacts causing damage to the host (cytokine storm). Adequate Vitamin D helps the immune system to act quickly when needed but not go mad when the job is done. There is ample evidence in the literature yet we are still told that an acceptable daily dose of under 1000 IU is adequate when 5000 IU is needed by most people.

The predominant winds over U.K. blow from the south west, taking any balloons across Denmark, Sweden and Finland, with minimal effects on Germany.

In 1940, German tanks were nothing special. Germany beat France with tactics and allowing front runners to make their own decisions. The Flak 88 was amazing but logistics were difficult due to large shells and large crew. The British lost all of their pre-war guns at Dunkirk. The 57mm Six Pounder Anti Tank was quickly introduced. This smaller weapon was easier to support and deadly to German armour. It was superseded by the 18 pounder and 25 pounder but remained in use throughout the war.

It seems surprising the heavy metal contaminated coral has not been removed.

My favourites - Lindybeige, Drachinifel, Mark Felton and History Guy. But then there's Greg's airplanes and even the IMechE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImEpk1s-Vk0

The thick plains grass also retained a huge amount of carbon. It happens in all cattle grazing grasslands only on a lesser scale.

@turtlemom Edward Jenner noted that milkmaids had good complexions. This led him to discover that a dose of the far less damaging cowpox conferred immunity against smallpox.
