  1. The period 900 to 1300 is known as the Medieval Warm Period. The climate was so benign that Vikings were crossing the Atlantic and had colonies on Greenland. The switch to colder weather shut down this activity. European human activity would have been similarly affected. These storms were the start of great changes that lasted until late C19th with the current warming period. Incidentally, the Roman Empire coincided with a 400 year warm period. The subsequent “Dark Ages” were colder.
