  1. Stainless welders need special air extraction or breathing equipment as the chrome vapour is harmful to lungs. TIG is less of a problem as the weld is protected with inert gas but the issues still apply if you are doing it all day.

  2. Why do we use stainless steel in space? It’s heavy stuff and not especially strong and space is a vacuum so there can’t be any oxidation.

  3. Stainless steel exhaust pipes last indefinitely but the very hot header pipes will corrode though much more slowly than carbon steel. Coal fire power plant boilers use stainless in the superheat tubes. The furnace walls water tubes often corrode on the fire side but the height (120ft) cannot cope with the higher expansion rate of stainless. The solution was co-extruded tube with stainless on the outside and mild steel inside. That solved the tube expansion and the corrosion problems.
