  1. Electric cars can simplify braking by using a motor in each wheel. They will easily stop the car just like friction brakes but (1) no pads to wear out (2) much less unsprung weight (3) no additional parts to buy. For emergencies have the motors dump their braking power into big resistors.

  2. Car brakes are boosted by engine vacuum. Lose the engine and you need a leg like Arnie to stop the car. Citroen their mineral oil hydraulics powered the brakes steering and suspension with a tiny pump driven by the engine. A hydraulic accumulator gave enough reserve power to stop the car. As back-up the parking brake worked on the front axle.
