  1. Afghanistan has large areas where the subsoil contains A LOT of salt. Dams built with foreign aid raised the water table. That brought up the salt which has polluted the surface soil. The aid has made the place even more sterile than it already was.

  2. Relying on any autocratic oligarchy for 50% of your energy via fixed services that they control is asking for trouble. The question is not that Germany is suffering now. It’s that Germany was not held to ransom long ago. Nuclear power is cheap. Nuclear power is the safest energy source Nuclear power is reliable. New nuclear even has the technology to solve the waste issue. There’s a huge energy source sitting right there. No new mining and no expensive fuel rod manufacturing.

  6.  @bvch7395  Power will be another issue. Mars has 50% of the sun's strength compared to Earth so you'll need 2x as many solar panels. They will get badly etched by the abrasive dust meaning people will be tasked to keep them clean and replace them. The only reliable power will be nuclear but at least Mars has the necessary elements. We do have molten salt reactors which are light weight, burn 99% of the fuel (vs 4%) and could work on Mars.

  7. The claimed 10 metres of sea level rise over the whole world looks excessive. Please can we see the arithmetic and assumptions.

  8. I sea levels were really rising fast enough to get 2.7 meters in 80 years we would already be seeing the effects. But we are not seeing anything close. In fact we are not seeing anything at all. The claims might not be totally fake but current evidence is not following the narrative.

  10. The Mars atmosphere is about 1% of the earth so offers no protection against the cold of space or the dangerous radiation. However the winds are enough to cause all the damage that high winds cause on earth. The only way anyone can live on Mars is underground in tunnels. The surface dust is toxic and extremely abrasive. Basically, you would go there to be a tunneller and to live in those tunnels. The surface is not inhabitable and may never be safe. The dust causing seals to fail is one thing but the atmosphere is too thin to stop meteorites. Sooner or later any sort of biodome will get punctured.

  14. Russia has two other SERIOUS problems not mentioned in the presentation. The healthcare system is almost non-existent drug resistant TB is endemic and the education system is no better. A huge percentage of the people are uneducated and riven with incurable disease. The others are addicted to hard drugs or moved out decades ago.

  21. The nuclear waste burning Elysium reactor is capable of burning the solidified "Chernobylite" waste found under the reactor. They work with nuclear waste to create a chloride salt fuel for a power reactor.

  22. Russia has always been governed by oligarchs. Yeltsin was an outlier and a sick drunken one to boot. Collapse of autocracies like the Tsars, Soviets and eventually Putin always results in power vacuums.
