My heart sank when Biden said “as long as it takes”. That was a direct invite for Putin to drag it out.

Ukraine has to be allowed to remove Russia from its lands. But when that happens Ukraine will need to protect its borders in the way Israel does. They’ll need anti-missile batteries and border defences that will actually stop Russia rolling back in.
37
Russia has never been able to properly manage its air defences. That’s how the Malayan airliner got shot down. They just shoot at anything moving.
29
Hitler is blamed for starting WW2 by invading Poland. But he had already invaded Czechia, Slovakia, Austria and the Sudetenland with no response from UK and France. The real cause of WW2 was weak government in UK and Western Europe that preferred to turn blind eyes to Hitler’s behaviour. Echos of that attitude allowed Russia to invade Ukraine.

Can we discuss the political issues this war has raised. The Right seem to think all help to Ukraine should stop. The left say everything is Russia’s fault. I lean right if centre but believe Russia has to be removed from Ukraine, because given a chance, they’ll simply regroup and start again.

Biden suddenly wakes up. It’s only taken 1000 days.

The gas pipelines were ruptured yet the automatic shut-off inlet valves remained open. These things are designed to slam shut so someone had to wedge them open. That vould only happen at the Russian end of the lines.
17
Pull troops out of the satellite nations and they’ll soon enough separate themselves- again. Pulling troops out of Eastern Siberia (Manchuria) risks China moving in.
14
2014 clearly shows that Putin snd Russia will not back down if they see any signs of weakness from Ukraine’s allies. The only long term solution is a comprehensive win by Ukraine. Anything less will be seen as weakness.
14
Please get Patrick Moore (the originator of Greenpeace) to talk about the ice core evidence on CO2. Then get Ian Scott of Moltex Energy to talk about his technology that will burn expired nuclear fuel. So called nuke waste is a fantastic energy resource.
13
I’m not a bot. I agree that Telegraph is the gold standard.
12
Ukraine has built a significant bridgehead on Dnipro Left Bank but it’s keeping extremely quiet about it. I think we can expect something to happen when Russia least expects it.
12
Ukraine was happy to relinquish its nukes because they are incredibly expensive to maintain. However, this war has already cost many orders of magnitude more than the cost of a nuclear arsenal.
11
Brent geese have been arriving in Southern England since mid August. They are 4 to 6 weeks early. Migratory geese arriving this early usually portends a hard winter in Russia.
11
British railways regularly suffer theft of heavy duty cables. Allegedly for the copper, but just as easily funded by malign operators.
10
Ukraine has smothered Russian trenches with cluster shells then troops go in within seconds of the barrage stopping. The gunnery accuracy and coordination with troops is simply stunning.
10
Zambia gained independence in 1964. That’s two whole generations ago. Why are they still incapable of running a reasonable government?
10
Despotphobia. Trolphobia.

Helmut Kohl was criticised for his extremely rapid reunification of Germany. I think the behaviours of Hungary and Romania indicate why this was done. East German politician Angela Merkel was a side effect of that move. However, Germany had plenty of time to rebalance before Russia could reset itself under a new dictatorship.
9
Wagner’s Riot of the Valkyries. Very clever. But Priggy will only get to the top just before he takes a long walk off a short balcony.
9
Kirill the Russian Orthodox Patriarch is an ex KGB agent and one of the richest men in Russia. No conflicts of interest there.
9
How will the “DNR” troops react when they see the atrocities committed by Russian forces? I can’t imagine them wanting to continue when they see what “their side” have done to ”their” people.
9
Yesterday’s counter attack in Bakhmut is small by normal standards. However, by the standards of this battle, it’s huge. Ukraine took an area of 6 square kilometres whereas Russia has struggled to take six square yards in the same time period.
9
Quote - Russia has seven A-50 AWACS remaining. How many of these are usable? How many viable crews do they have?
9
Does Russia have any idea how the bridge was hit? Hopefully Ukraine can finish the job very soon.
9
The new drone boats need to dive under the ship when attacking. Exploding underwater has a much bigger effect that popping off alongside.
8
UK is holding back Challenger tanks in case they are needed. However not sending enough sets up Ukraine to fail. UK should at least quadruple the numbers being sent. Ideally a lot more than that.
8
Those adoring “soldiers” dressed in squeaky clean inform who greeted Putin. None of them were there in Mariupol or at his speeches. Of course not.
8
Brexit has hardly affected moving about Europe. We managed fine before 1992 (Maastricht Treaty). We continue just fine after Brexit.
7
Ukraine is unlikely to enter into costly battles over Kherson. There is no need to do anything but sink ferries on the Dneiper and keep the Russians boxed in. Collapse is inevitable.
7
China had considered Australia as a client state if not a colony. Certain Australian state governments basically encouraged this idea (eg the port in Darwin and behaviour of Victoria governor.) The national government eventually took action and of course China acts like it’s been snubbed.
7
The Russians had already blocked the dam flow regulating valves. The water level was close to overtopping. It’s no coincidence they blew it up with the maximum possible water level.
7
Not to belittle what USA is doing for Ukraine, but USA has flagged its donations at cost price. In reality, the stuff was written down at least a decade ago. Sending it out has reduced the storage costs.
7
Russians data is always 10X higher (or lower) than the genuine figures. 370,000 Russian KIA v 50,000 Ukraine KIA is realistic.
7
The British Empire was brutal (as was normal at the time) but it also brought so much infrastructure to its dominions that there was really very little profit. We should also remember they brought the rule of law to previously lawless & even more brutal areas. Africa especially.
6
Belarusians have tried but the military is fully occupied in keeping any dissent under government control.
6
Mark says the military generals are the real professionals. I think this war has shown that Russian military is frankly very UN-professional. They literally cannot feed or clothe their troops. Utter incompetence of the worst order.
6
Russia has huge stocks of “mothballed” military vehicles. But everything that can be moved has already been taken into use. Maybe the first 100,000 conscripts will be used to get the ancient scrap iron started. Good luck with that.
6
Nuclear weapons need considerable babysitting and careful maintenance. Considering how carefully Russia maintains its equipment, how viable are their nukes?
6
ATACMS missiles are extremely expensive and are big enough for S400 SAMs to take them out. The new Small Diameter Bombs stuck on rocket sticks are cheap extremely accurate and Russia cannot shoot them down.
6
The cross-border raids have no significant tactical effect. But the strategic damage is significant. Especially if they take land and hold it.
6
Russian oil refineries are existing assets they cannot replace. Ukraine is taking out fractionation towers that Russia bought in. Russia has no expertise to repair the damage.
6
It’s an exaggeration to say there are 200 Armarta tanks. It’s highly unlikely that Russia has more than 10 or 20. One has been filmed at long range with its turret twirling in pointless ways. Two more failed to get across Red Square. Su 57 is no better. It’s a smartly painted stunt plane. One crashed in 2019 and very few have ever been seen. The long tailpipes and rounded lines suggest it has very poor stealth talents.
6
Sunak is little better than Sholz. He refuses to increase defence spending at a time when he knows that Starmer is likely to win the next election. Commitment to 3% or more would force Starmer to keep it going as cutting spending now would look incredibly weak.
6
Russia escaped from Kherson city using boats. Kill the bridge. They can do the same in Crimea.
6
Wagner works alongside the Russian army. But they are all doing their own thing. Wagner are absolutely not working closely WITH the Russian army or anyone else.
5
@limedickandrew6016 The Russian T90 is 3.5 decades ago and has never seen an upgrade.
5
East Ukraine irregular fighters were effectively the Russian army trying to take over Ukraine on the cheap. The Ukraine government kept it under some control for 8 years until Putin stepped in with his regular army. The whole sorry story is Russia throwing it’s weight around.
5
It really doesn’t matter. He’s useless and avoiding offices with windows.
5
The Belgorod building was hit on the opposite side from the border. Ukraine drones are not big enough to do that dirt of damage. Their modified small aircraft would have left evidence.
