  1. British night fighters had exhaust flame dampers. They reduced top speed but the flickering light dazzled the pilot’s night vision. German planes had inverted cylinders with lower set exhausts. They eventually fitted dampers because those annoying Brits could seem them coming.

  2. Negative G flooding was a common flaw in most engines of the day. The German Mercedes Benz engines were fuel injected so didn’t have the problem.
