  1. The Russians built these dangerous reactors because they were better for creating bomb grade plutonium. The problem was an unstable core that under the right circumstances could go hypercritical. It’s said the core actually blew apart in a mini nuclear explosion. It was not a full on bomb blast because it blew itself apart. But it came close. Western reactors and especially the new molten salts cannot get into such a state. Overheating causes them to shut down long before they reach dangerous levels.
