  1. Japan successfully brought a massive industrial force into the war against them. 6 months later their best aircraft carriers were gone. Their leaders were no different to Hitler, Stalin, Putin or any other autocrat. Their empire in east Asia could have grown. All they had to do was work with USA and not abuse their conquered people. Obviously an impossible task for any autocrat.

  2. Putin planned to occupy all of eastern and southern Ukraine across the whole Azov and Black Sea coasts. They were let in by sympathetic local leaders and military. Quite why Ukraine could not better manage the situation before the war is anyone’s guess.
