I say it all the time. Check out Moltex and Elysium. They have the engineering sorted and costed. The road block is entirely regulatory. Not because they have to solve new problems but because there are no rules (yet) for their new very simple reactors.

Nuclear in its current form IS NOT the answer. The huge capital costs long lead times make it commercially very risky. Adding in the waste management is just too much. However the new designs from Elysium and Moltex are now fully engineered. Moltex is moving down the regulatory path up in Canada. Both of these use chloride molten salts. The Moltex holds the fuel in tubes which heat a tank of none fuel chloride. The heat is removed by a third salt which heats thermal stores. These provide heat for peaker turbines that can vary their load with no loss of efficiency. These reactors are fuelled by irradiated used fuel aka “Nuclear Waste”. The old plant extracted less than 5% of the fissile energy. Moltex and Elysium can extract the other 95%. Stuff with a 1/2 life of 30,000 years comes out with a 1/2 life of 30 years. There is no need for any uranium mining because they can also be fuelled with plutonium or even depleted uranium.
