  1. There is no fundamental difference between Hitler’s fascists and Stalin’s communists. France has always been on the verge of communism so there was not much of a step to support the Nazis. Pre D-Day U.K. was sending arms to the French Resistance but the weapons just vanished into hands of the communist activists. U.K. realised they were potentially arming a new resistance so the gun-running was stopped.

  2. World War One was a mess because U.K. allowed France to take the lead. That quickly led to stalemate with British soldiers taking a hammering alongside the French. If the British had used just one of two brain cells, they’d have kept well away from the whole sorry mess. They had already lost the war by 1916 and would have eventually been rolled over if USA had kept out.

  3. At least one French general refused to instal telephones in his headquarters never mind new fangled radios. It’s no surprise France was quickly overrun. But after that Vichy France couldn’t wait to bend the knee to Hitler’s rule.
