Back during WW2, Rolls-Royce and Ricardo developed the Merlin and Griffon engines using V twin and single cylinder test mules. Merlins were known to throw con rods at high revs. But the test mules never did. It was eventually realised the test V-twins used the full size oil pump - no worries. The pump was too small to feed the V12. Bigger oil pump and no more thrown con rods.

Put a Freevalve on the top and what a stunning thing that would be.

I would like to see the engine rebuilt but that blueing sounds terminal. At least the replacement can have its sump, block and head soda blasted.

With all his money, James should have his own private island Or at least a powered gate opener.

Dead right. The editors are clearly tone deaf.

He’s a man with his priorities just right.

To be honest these easy features should be on by default. An easy software switch. Those who don’t like them could change the settings.

What is so different about a “performance” oil filter over standard oil filter?

Any of the old hydro pneumatic Citroen’s. Especially DS and late CX turbos. Yes they rusted but what didn’t? A few years ago I struggled to keep up with a well driven CZ Turbo 2. But I was in a 1200cc motorbike and I know how to ride it. Than Citroen was flying and cornered like it was on rails.

Don’t stress about the scabby exhaust they always rust like that. Replace with stainless and move on.

For anyone in the Burton-on-Trent / Derby area CJ Ward enamelers are a top team for powder coating. The metal is phosphate primed before the powder goes on. They are also great for alloy parts. Ive not been paid to say this.

The Renault Avantime was a missed opportunity because they never marketed it. It would be a great reboot. Ditto Citroen CX without the rust and add with electric power and very much with the hydraulics.

What about the Ford Essex V4? 60* with balance shaft.

Lancias of that age were rust buckets. But the Botswana climate will have protected it. Worth a fortune when restored. BUT how much do you restore it?

Rotax have super clean direct injection two-strokes in the Skidoo snowmobiles and Evinrude outboards. They are also more efficient than competing four strokes more powerful and cheaper to buy. 850cc 160 bhp. How about X format two strokes?

Hammond, May and Clarkson are amazing presenters with always entertaining banter between them. They are not and never have pretended to be competent mechanics. OK, maybe best not say that to James. But he is a fussy wotsit.

I would love to see a bypass oil filter. They put 10% of the oil flow through an ultra fine sub-micron filter so the oil is always polished clean.

English seaside towns it has to be Devon. North Coast and South Coast are so different and there’s everything in the middle. Dartmoor and Teign valley are stunning any time of year but so is the whole county. Don’t forget River Dart of course.

What’s missing is a late model Citroen CX mildly updated but otherwise kept as Andre originally wanted it.

What are Cosworth doing about electronic cams? Are they working with Konisegg to get them into public use? Or is it now all too late?

Batteries put 90% of the charge into the motors. Fuel cells waste 30% creating the hydrogen then the fuel cell itself watts another 50%. That’s 35% of the charging electricity reaching the motor. On top of that, hydrogen leaks out. Leave it parked a couple of weeks and the tank will be empty.

Fabulous idea but too risky for the execs.

Honda have been keen on V4 bikes since the late 1970s https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/features/bikes/honda-v4-history I would like to see a V4 2 stroke or even a 4 cylinder radial 2 stroke. The latter is two V twins back to back with all four con-rods on one crank pin, perfect primary balance and virtually no torque vibration. The latest 2 strokes are very clean, very powerful and economical on fuel. Nothing like the smokers of the past. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu3NEPSBfUs

Do what you do and get others to do the stuff you don’t do or can’t do. Sensible devision of labour.

Are you going to share with us the rust damage repairs. It’s hugely skilled work.
