  1. The yoke has a new advantage because it forces drivers to hold the “wheel” correctly at 3 o’clock / 9 o’clock. How many times do you see drivers sitting too close with both hands at 12 o’clock. It’s frighteningly common and impossible to react usefully like that.

  2. The old large steering wheel comes from a time when you needed many rotations to go lock to lock. Today we have less than two turns and with variable power assistance less than that.

  3. Citroen DIRAVI was a hydraulic steering system that allowed the front wheels to be totally neutral geometry. There was no torque steer even if one side lost grip and potholes would not pull the car sideways. Although everything was done by hydraulics, automotive regulators demanded a mechanical rack & pinion. A variable steering angle was perfectly possible but the legally required rack & pinion put paid to the option.
