  2. Automotive electronics began with electronic ignition systems. They evolved into separate modules plugged together with complex bundles of wires. They have been surprisingly reliable but costs must be high. Tesla had a clean sheet design, so fewer boxes were the obvious solution.

  3. In addition to genuine innovation (think MultiAir), Fiat were always extremely good at modular design and continuing use of older parts designs. Basically if it's not broke... It's worked amazingly well at least since the original Uno of the early 1980s. But it's a massive deadweight for electric cars.
