  1. Sewerage treatment works in UK already use anaerobic digesters as part of the treatment process. The gas generated gets used in the plant to power generators and heaters. The resultant sludge is sterilised and used as land fertiliser.

  2. UK sewerage treatment plants have used anaerobic digestion for decades. The energy generated runs the plant and provides heat where needed. Newer designs are more efficient but the process is the same.
