  1. Make the profits high enough and farmers (especially where there is no regulatory control) will clear virgin lands to grow the crops. It's happened with Soy, Palm oil and why not maize. However what happened to the enzyme processes allowing corn stalks and wheat/barley straw to be used to make ethanol?

  6.  @Hot-1LE  How much have road deaths really improved over the intervening years? Put anyone in a noisy tin can and they'll be careful. Put the same driver in a highly insulated padded cell and see what happens.

  7. How about a hydraulic drive? Basically a CVT could do direct drive at the right point. Not done because its supposed to be inefficient but look at the pump and motor ports and fittings. A huge amount could be done to smooth the fluid flow improving efficiency.

  8. Our power supply system just has to move forward. Renewables being so unreliable are reaching their peak because they must have conventional plants to fill the gaps. The logical solution to that is molten salt nuclear. Moltex and Thorcon seem to be making the running on this. It’s time for another video on the subject. See if you can get their people to discuss Ian Scott and Robert Hargraves are great communicators

  9. 80 lb-ft per litre is about the same as the four cylinder eight valve Kawasaki Z1 900 bike from 1972. We’ve made engines spin more than 2x as fast but why can’t we improve the torque?

  10. It's generally said that if you can make the same torque at 2x the revs you'll double the power. That short stroke, wide bore and big valves are so you can get 2x the air and fuel through the engine to deliver that power. By the way - Honda's CBR600 motorcycle engine makes Power - 88.1 kW (118.1 bhp) @ 13,500 rpm Torque - Crankshaft (claimed) 66 N⋅m (49 lbf⋅ft) @ 11,250 rpm That's about 196bhp per litre !!! They dont say what spec fuel it needs to make best pt of 200bhp/litre.

  11. The big thing missing from Bugatti is electric transmission. Performance would increase because losses through the mechanical gears go away. Oh hang on - that’s exactly what they are doing. Sort of. But they couldn’t resist having a gearbox out the back.

  12. I would certainly try to have them repaired and straightened. You need a specialist as they must be pre heated but the repair process would make good YT video.

  13. I thought a 3dB noise increase doubled the sound pressure. 10dB would be 8x louder. We also need to be lobbying our governments who build the roads. They can easily build quiet surfaces but 99% of the time they simply can’t be bothered.

  14. The 2015 to 2020 Yamaha R1 motorcycle engine is 998cc 79.0mm bore x 50.9mm stroke. It develops at the REAR WHEEL 188.4 bhp at 12,729 rpm. Peak torque is 78.6 Nm at 8,790 rpm. All done with natural aspiration and it meets Euro emissions standards. Why can’t the car achieve this?

  15. My car weighs 975kg (call it a ton), sits on 195-50-R15 tyres (98mm side walls) wrapped around 6.5J ET30 alloys. But hit a typical UK pothole and the wheels go lumpy. I’m sick of the hassle so going to same size steel wheels. They cost so little as to be almost disposable so when the inevitable happens it won’t really matter so much.

  16. Jason. Please can you check out the Liquid Piston engine. And tell us what you think It’s an odd name but they basically swapped the rotor and stator shapes. Triangular(ish) stator with ovoid rotor. It has a longer blowdown than it does compression so runs efficiently with low noise.

Wikipedia says Multiair is a hydraulically-actuated variable valve timing and variable valve lift engine technology enabling "cylinder by cylinder, stroke by stroke" control of intake air directly via a gasoline engine's inlet valves.   19. Three speeds could be done with an upscaled hub gearbox. Same principle as a Sturmey Archer bicycle hub gear. They are quiet but extremely efficient. Come on Formula E lets have some out of the box thinking.

  24. Sooty inlet valves suggest the air flow is reversing in the inlet ports. The cam timing and port design need work or fit a reed valve.

  25. Sandy Munro is stripping down a Tesla Model S Plaid. The most obvious fact is the extreme level of packaging integration. Many items do more than one job. Fantastic for squeezing stuff into space, increasing reliability and reducing weight. I’m not so sure it’s so great when maintenance is needed. The average mechanic won’t have a clue where to start. It risks the sort of bodge jobs that gave the (actually excellent) hydraulic Citroens a bad name for reliability.

  26. VTECH is nice but the Fiat Multi-Air with hydraulic powered inlet valves is even better. It controls lift and duration from zero to 100%. There is no throttle valve to control engine power.

  27. Check out the DieselAir two stroke opposed piston aero diesel. Also the Delta Hawk V4 and Zoche 4 cylinder radial. The latter is really simple. 4 cylinders arranged around a single crank pin. Sadly it relied on government funding so simply fizzled out.

  28. Shortening a spring makes it stiffer by the percentage of shortening. By the looks of it, the spring clamps do something similar (until the spring fractures). Progressive springs give a good compromise without fancy levers and stuff to give a rising rate.

  29. Another thought. New wheels with a wider offset (ET) are no different in handling terms to wheel spacers. The only advantage is your standard wheel bolts will be ok.

  30.  @weetikissa  Yesterday, I saw a red Model 3 in Newton Abbot UK. Tesla are beginning to affect sales of top brand ICE cars. The new Lekky Porsche canty compete. Its slower, has less range and costs considerably more. It gets around the Nurburgring a bit quicker but in the real world the Tesla beats it everywhere.

  32. Can you fit smaller diameter STEEL wheels to fit over the big brakes? They won’t be as pretty as alloys but you get more winter tyre choice and aero covers will look the same as any other wheel with covers.

  33. Epicyclic gears and torque converter do the job just fine. the TC is only used when pulling away from standstill. During gear shifts, the epicyclics are slipped in/out with individual clutches. The big gain with epicyclic gears is straight cut gears with three or four planet gears on each sun/annulus assembly. High torque and no noise.

  35. A wheel on each corner is the way to go for max grip. Tesla with the twin motors and ABS traction gives the next best at the expense of brake wear if you use it a lot.

  36. In U.K. the lowest spec gasoline is 95 RON. 97 and 99 are sold as premium fuels. There is a noticeable difference. My car on 95 feels like the exhaust is corked up. It would be hugely down on power at 87 RON. No surprise that US cars have such big engines.
