  1. Epicyclic gears and torque converter do the job just fine. the TC is only used when pulling away from standstill. During gear shifts, the epicyclics are slipped in/out with individual clutches. The big gain with epicyclic gears is straight cut gears with three or four planet gears on each sun/annulus assembly. High torque and no noise.
