  1. Shortening a spring makes it stiffer by the percentage of shortening. By the looks of it, the spring clamps do something similar (until the spring fractures). Progressive springs give a good compromise without fancy levers and stuff to give a rising rate.

  2. Another thought. New wheels with a wider offset (ET) are no different in handling terms to wheel spacers. The only advantage is your standard wheel bolts will be ok.
