It’s a team sport. Reliability DNFs will always be part of the sport

Synchromesh slows the gear shift time. With revs matched a simple dog engagement is much faster shifting. It also allows clutchless up shifts.

Race winning is always abut a good driver in a good car. Remove one or other factor and you don.t get anywhere. Simples.

An old Pike Peak bike racer said to Guy Martin, “the road never leaves the mountain so all you have to do is stay on the road”. I’m sure Guy found that really helpful.

Someone asked how such small parts can handle the power - extreme high revs is the answer. The pre hybrid F1s were making 800bhp at something like 18,000 revs. Bike gearboxes are just like this but for some reason, bikes run the gearbox slower than the engine. I have no idea why because fewer revs = more torque so the parts can be bigger.

Rosberg deliberately steered into Hamilton. Hamilton did not correct his understeer maybe he could have missed Vestappen maybe the steering would have worsened the crash.

Why don’t we have gravel traps (that work) on these run-off areas? If they are not possible then use soft crash barriers that damage car aerodynamics but not the structure or the driver.

Pre chamber combustion was proven in the 1980s but back then they had no control systems that could make it work properly. It should be better than direct injection especially as a ceramic chamber could bd used to retain the heat. Ceramic cylinders might also help.

Active suspension was banned because the FIA were not interested in forcing the use of driver safety pods.

Agree 100%. Perez took a risk that didn’t pay off. There was no case to answer. Frankly the race stewards should be removed for everything except the most obvious safety issues.

Jabbing the throttle is a way of digitally controlling the average airflow with your right foot. Today's electronic controls would simply average it out so might as well choose your best settings.

Ross Brawn said in the 1980s that downforce lost by removing ground effect was replaced by upper body wings within 2 years at the cost of wake turbulence. Why has it taken nearly 40 years to correct this mistake?

Guy Martin achieved the fastest unlimited motorcycle time on a bike he built himself. Thats that’s bending frame tubes and sorting the suspension geometry. He ran a turbocharged Suzuki 1200 engine that never got running right. What would be his time with a properly running engine.

Engineers can cheat without actually cheating but 99% are too straight-laced to consider the idea.

The wheel has to slide inward to meet the axle. Over-wheel covers are not an issue.

The original ground effect cars struggled with porpoising. Nigel Mansell said the early Williams was undrivable. Too hard felt like his eyes were being knocked out. Active suspension sorted it but that’s long since banned.

An Tyrrell F1 six (or even eight wheeler) should be able to turn fast and get the power down

When Fi used 13 inch wheels and fat tyres, suspension was more about controlling the effects of larger bumps. Today's cars with 17 inch wheels and low profile tyres need suspension that actually does shock absorbing stuff.
1
Verstappen was tiring to use the same DRS trick against Hamilton.
1
Why can’t we use proper ground effect? Oh yes, the FIA banned it nearly 40 years ago allegedly because it wasn’t safe.

Parallels shaft gearboxes always have the issue of the shafts trying to push apart. Epicyclic gears keep all the forces contained and share the loads between three or more planet gears. They are fast shifting and more efficient so who knows why F1 don’t use them.

Technology moved on but Rolls-Royce and Daimler-Benz both experimented with stacked V engines. They all failed. Mostly cooling but also harmonic vibration and oil pumps that could not keep up with oil demand.
