  2. My Fiat/GM 1.3 diesel engine has twin cams 16 valves and a cam chain. Great idea, except Fiat had considerable experience with dry timing belts. Their engines are notably reliable. But GM demanded a change to timing chain. Result is chain side plate failure around 100,00 to 120,000 miles. Fiat later fitted an anti-backlash gear to the cam gears. Which helped but chain replacement is far more complicated than simply swapping the dry timing belt.
