Radial four has perfect primary and almost perfect secondary balance. All four rods sit on a single crank pin. It has to be two-stroke but Rotax have already proved they can be cleaner and more efficient than competing four strokes. The design does need a blower for low speed airflow but as there is less piston noise as there is no juggling of air between crankcase and upper cylinder. Pumping losses are the same either way. When you add reed valves and variable exhaust ports the power and efficiency is amazing.
