UK cars are classed by the regulations that applied when new. It makes sense as old stuff can stay on the road until it's worn out but it has to be maintained to original standards.

Opposed piston diesels are extremely clean. However uncontrolled injection will create black smoke. The direct injection Rotax ETECH burns gasoline but it’s more efficient and more powerful than competing four strokes.

BRP Rotax have conventional two stroke with direct injection. It is extremely powerful and fuel is not lost down the exhaust. It is more efficient than competing four strokes and gives better fuel consumption. Overall oil consumption is only slightly higher than a four stroke but there is no cost of oil change and no filter is needed.

Everyone says the DB600 engines had “direct injection”. What does that mean? Is fuel injected “directly” into the inlet ports or “directly” into the cylinders. It’s an important difference.

Wankel made a fundamental error. If his stator had been a tricorn shape and rotor and oval the tip seals would be static and a spark plug at each corners solves the flame quench issues. Sadly nobody (of note) has considered this change.
