  1. The climate was cold so being a bigger rabbit was beneficial. The recent ice ages dropped sea levels by 200 ft. We know the English Channel was once the Rhine estuary. The North Sea was 50% land (Doggerland). When the ice age melted sea levels rose to where they are today.

  2. The Mediterranean Sea hides huge salt formations. Exposing that would be massive ecological disaster as salt gets blown about.
