Too few dealerships in the US. Probably repairs priced at BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar levels. Assuming you could find a mechanic that could work on this automotive technology marvel.

If you owned a VW Bug where the climate was freezing and snowy you needed an ice scraper for inside the windshield. The air cooled engine couldn’t pump out enough heat to defrost or heat the interior in sub zero temperature. In the 60s and 70s it still had better traction than most rear wheel drive cars at the time.

Why? Wife’s 2005 Toyota Matrix 185,000 miles less than $1000 in repairs. My 2014 Chrysler 130,000 miles….$11,000 in warranty work since new. (FCA Lifetime Maximum Warranty)

What I recall is that it had a cramped interior and no trunk space. Also as a convertible the windshield header was in your line of sight. Not an incentive for ownership.
